Don't Simply Trust Reviews

June 9, 2008 20:12 by Chris.Moss

I was forwarded an interesting email from a friend today.

Yes I am a fan of Ubuntu, I run virtualized versions for my LAMP server at home as well as my boys love their Edubuntu

Ubuntu Review

OK I thought, he then told me to look at a review for the product titled Don't waste your money, go buy Windows! by Ernesto Granillo III

I can't stop laughing.  His comment has actually generated more comments than the product.

I guess next time I am reminded that I don't know as much about computers and I would like to think I can come read his review.

Answer the phone

June 5, 2008 11:55 by Chris.Moss

Why is our society so obsessed with phones?  If it rings, answer it!!

It is almost like we live our lives just in anticipation that someone will call.  Why do I have to stop my life every time someone calls?  Why am I looked at as a scrooge when I choose not to answer the phone?
Yes, I understand in the past we actually liked to answer the phone because we never knew who it was.  It was kind of like playing a game and you never knew if you were going to win or not.  Maybe we liked to talk because the caller had to pay the bill and not the recipient.  However these days that is not always the case.

Cell phones for instance all tell you who or at least what number someone is calling from.  Not only that but you both get charged whether you made the call or answered the call.  If they choose to block their number well then I simply choose to not answer, sorry no more games.  Yes, It frustrates my dad when I do not answer his calls just because I cannot see who is calling, oh well!!  If he wanted to talk to me that much he would simply turn his number back on.

Likewise with home phones,  They all have to option to see who the caller is as well.  I myself use Vonage therefore caller ID is included, but I believe it is available with almost all services even land lines for the right price.

So I ask again: Why do I HAVE to answer it just because it rings?

  • What if I can't get there in time?
  • What if I don't feel like talking to anyone?
  • What if I have a life and I am busy doing something else?
  • What if I would like 30 seconds of peace in my life and just want to relax?
  • What if I can see you on caller ID and simply don't want to talk to you?
  • What if you have already left me 3 messages and I simply don't want to talk to you?
  • What if? What if? What if?

So many questions and in the end one simple answer.

I run my life not the phone!

If you decide to throw yourself a little pity party when I do not answer, Enjoy!  Don’t invite me!

I once read that there are things that act and things that are acted upon.  I prefer to be the one who acts!  I refuse to let an object run my life.

PS.  If you disagree or for some reason feel like you need to give me a call to talk, just pick up the phone and give me a call.

What to do with your Rebate Check

April 30, 2008 09:28 by Chris.Moss

I just received an office email and I thought it was humorous.   So I will share.

How to Spend Your IRS Rebate Check:

As you know, the Bush Administration said each of us will get a rebate check to stimulate the economy.
  • If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China.
  • If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs.
  • If we purchase a computer it will go to India.
  • If we purchase fruits and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.
  • If we purchase a good car it will go to Japan.
  • If we purchase useless junk it will go to Taiwan.
None of this will help the American economy.

We need to keep that money here in America!

The only way to do that is to spend it at yard sales, since those are the only businesses still in the US......

While this may not be exactly truthful in all accounts it does bring up a good point.

What are we going to do with our $$ that will actually help us as a country in the long run?

On top of that I heard today that there is once again speculation that the FEDS are going to drop the interest rate yet again.  Why??  I will admit I am not a financial GURU but to me it seems that doing so put us in an even worse sitiation financially with the rest of the world.

Geneology

April 2, 2008 06:15 by Chris.Moss

So I had this plan to create a website that was simple to use and would allow me to create my Pedigree chart etc.  Then allow people in my chart to add more and link our charts together into one big happy family.  My goal was to create a free and fun enviroment to promote geneology and tracking your family history.  Well in my research I found a site that already exists and that I am very happy with.

Geni

It is still in the works but I have been really impressed.  It is easy to use and simple but yet very complex in that it has the ability to store huge amounts of data.  Much more advanced thanI had even considered doing for the time being.

Yes it is a social network.  But this is one that I could get into.  I am not much of a facebook guy, I do like LinkedIn though.

Anyway looks like I was a bit too slow once again.

Enjoy

My thoughts on .Net these days

March 25, 2008 08:37 by Chris.Moss

I have often lately felt frustrated with .net development.  I get sick of just getting the job done, I miss the days where I had the time to worry about how I was doing the job, How I could improve things.

I have started dabbling in other frameworks again.  No I am not about to abandon .Net I simply like to be familiar with what else is out there.  I have a realtive that is big into Ruby and Python.  Even though not my favorite php is still there and has been pretty constant.

Looks like I am not the only one frustrated with how things are going in .Net these days

Any thoughts?

Real Estate Market in Utah

February 26, 2008 09:22 by Chris.Moss

I often wonder how things are going here in Utah.  I hear on the news how bad things are but looking around they do not seem to bad.

Ya there have been lots of stupid people making stupid financial decisions but what is new this is America after all.

My little Brother just posted a clarification about things here in utah and he even linked to some good sources.

Check it out
